Design in Black & White

torsion_2_2

Its bold, its high contrast and it never seems to fall out of favor. In his H Torsion free-flowing wall mural, Jim Soliven takes it all a step further. An organic show of thousands of  lines on white actually consist of tiny black rectangulars generated by the artist’s computer programming. Jim Soliven is a programmer and computational artist based in New York City. @ Hang & Paste

PULL Magnetic Fixtures by Orange 22

PULL is the brainchild of Orange 22, a Los Angeles based design firm that specializes in retail environments. In response to a client’s frustration with traditional slat wall and puck system, Orange 22 came up with the idea of using magnets to create a more fluid display surface. The system is made up of panels that can be skinned with virtually any material: leather, fabric, wood veneer, laminate and graphics. Magnetic pegs and shelves that can support up to 35 pounds each are added to the panel. The display can be rearranged to accomodate changing displays. I know what you’re thinking – this would be great in my home – however, Orange 22 is quick to point out that this is not a storage system, its a product for retail display…

Busby Berkeley Hits the Wall

bella_bella_2
Rachel de Joode seems to be channeling her inner Busby Berkeley with her Noir Collection of wallpapers. Although Jugendstil (The German expression of Art Nouveau) is the reference in de Joode’s design, we can’t help but think of Berkeley. Busby Berkeley was known for creating  kaledioscopic patterns with his dancers in fantastic cinematic performances as in Dames, below.

What is intriguing about de Joode’s work is her use of contemporary fashion photography. Her characters are dancing or acting in a sort of surrealist play.

Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles became famous in the 18th century for producing Toile du Jouy, cotton and linen printed with detailed landscapes or pastoral themes. Jessica Smith has her own interpretation of what might be described as our landscape. Her themes relate to how most of us live – Cars Go Beep and Trash Day are wallpaper patterns that examine our daily routines. Not glamorous, but never-the-less intriguing.

Modern Ceramic Tiles

I get alot of emails, I look at most of them and once in awhile something really catches my eye – rawtiles creates a nice line of modernist ceramic tiles using traditional glazing techniques. They offer some really appealing patterns and a nice color palate. Tile sizes inlcude 4″x4″, 6″x6″ and 8″x8″. Made in Los Angeles for both indoor and outdoor application. Its worth a look.

Wall Flats

We saw these great looking wall panels at ICff in May. Love the look, the flexibility and the ease of installation. The panels are 18″ x 18″ with adhesive strips on each panel. The come only in white and are made of paper (inside only!) inhabit
