Taking inspiration from art, sculptural wire forms and familiar objects in North American landscapes results in an interesting and ecclectic collection of rugs from The Nought Collective. Pair those edgy themes with the centuries old weaving tradition in Nepal and India and you end up with the appealing contradiction found in these artwork-rugs. The motifs run from the more conservative linear patterns of the America’s Collection to the Have a Nice Day Smiley Face and Moai (Easter Island) profiles of the Oh My Head Collection. A unique collection that is truly worth a peek.

Woodnotes is a Finnish design company founded over 20 years ago by textile artist Ritva Puotila. The goal was to interpret basic Finnish raw materials: wood and paper with creativity and artistry. The basic design element is spun paper yarn – which is actually about 86% paper and 14% cotton. The claim is that paper yarn does not harbor dirt and dust, tolerates humidity and is flame resistant. They are also touted as easy to clean and maintain.
While these are all great reasons to consider the rugs, I like them because they look really great. They are very graphic and low profile, yet softer to the touch than I had expected.
The rugs are made in combinations of 10 patterns and 10 colors. @ Linea, LA.

Dia Rugs designed by Magdalena Lubinska and Michal Kopaniszyn were awarded the 2008 Red Dot Award and the Wallpaper* award for Best Textile. Yaschilan Carpet by Vittorio Locatelli for Driade. Locatelli combines architectural and interior design with applied arts including illustration, graphic design and painting. The result here is just really pretty. From the colors to the highly detailed design, this rug is beautiful. I am really curious about the name, Yaschilan. From what I can find, it may be reference to the Yaxchilan area of Mexico – a Mayan archaelogical center that is only reachable by air or boat on Rio Usmacinta, the river that divides Mexico and Guatemala. If anyone knows the story behind this piece or its name, tip us off! @Linea

Ok, one more and I’ll stop – but Slab by Michal Kopaniszyn for Moho Design, Poland is a beautiful rug made from pure wool. If it is possible for an area rug to have life, this one is it. From a simple background emerges a lively random burst of color. I love it. In LA at twentieth and Chicago at IQMatics.

I’m on a little bit of a kick with Polish design in general and MohoDesign in particular. How can you not love this Chicken rug (i think its a chicken). And because I get frustrated with a great image of something I cannot get, here are some US Dealer: IQMatics in Chicago and twentieth in Los Angeles.
