Emily Pilloton: Design for Change

Designer Emily Pilloton’s nonprofit Studio H took up residence in Bertie County North Carolina to take a chance on improving the lives of school children through design.

We first learned about Emily Pilloton back in 2006 when we came across her Human Nest chair at the HAUTE Green exhibit in Brooklyn during New York’s design week. Pilloton’s take on the nesting instinct was a bamboo frame embelished with layers of scrap fabric. We loved her thought process and creativity then and are inspired by her design-in-action via H-Studio now.

AD Show Hosts Furniture Society Auction

maloof_1

The Furniture Society is hosting its first Fine Art Auction at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show March 17-20, 2011, at Pier 94 in New York City. The Live Auction features works by recipients of the Society’s Award of Distinction, among them: Sam Maloof Studio, Garry Knox Bennett, Wendell Castle, Michael Fortune, Vladimir Kagan, John Makepeace, , Judy McKie & Tommy Simpson.

Shown here is one of the auction items, Low Back Chair by Sam Maloof Studio. Sam Maloof was noted for his simple, practical designs of the 1950’s. Maloof worked in Southern California for nearly 60 years and was a true artisan that turned out simple, useful designs made one at a time.  Always humble, Maloof referred to himself as a woodworker, despite the fact that he was recoginzed as a pioneer in his field. His work was the subject of a retrospective at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2001 and he was the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur Foundation grant. Maloof’s pieces were joined without hardware; they were composed entirely of wood. Maloof passed away in 2009, but while he was alive, he generously shared his know-how with others even publishing a “how-to” book in 1983.

Art & Design:Ceramic Sculpture

shells
Created by New York artist Maggie Wells, these one-of-kind hand formed ceramic sculptures can be stacked, piled and rearranged as you like. They have no title but I see shells, petrified wood, ancient flowers or bones… in any case there is a certain subtle wisdom about the composition that we find really compelling. Available @ Karkula.

Loft Living & the Surfrider Foundation… How does that work?

pixel 1
When a Santa Barbara couple decided to develop a live-work space for a downtown living experience, they found themselves looking for modern design online:  ”I took a leap of faith and purchased virtually every item for this space online, from faucets and appliances to lighting and furnishings.” It was through that virtual shopping experience that they happened upon the Pixel Burst Bench designed by Yves Behar for Botanist: “As soon as I saw the Botanist benches online, I knew I had found exactly what I was looking for: versatility, uniqueness, graphic punch – they definitely have the “Wow!’ factor”.

The couple was also pleased that a portion of the sale would benefit a non-profit. Botanist invites each of it’s designers to select a nonprofit that will benefit from the sale of their pieces. In the case of Pixel Burst, Yves Behar designated Surfrider Foundation – particularly fitting for a bench that resides in Santa Barbara.

The Botanist Series is an eco-friendly furniture and home accessories line with a committment to great design and social responsibility. Botanist boasts designs from the likes of Milton Glaser, Massimo, Karim Rashid, Tord Boontje and Yves Behar and supports designer-designated organizations including the Cancer Research Institute, Greenpeace, Save the Children and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
