Brown Jordan reintroduces Walter Lamb

Brown Jordan has reintroduced a classic: the Walter Lamb Collection. Lamb designed his collection in 1945 in Hawaii just after the war. He salvaged bronze and cotton from sunken ships in Pearl Harbor. His gently curved frame was hand wrapped in cotton cording. Later, the recycled materials source became depleted. Brown Jordan purchased his design and began to manufacture the pieces. Today, the Walter Lamb Collection is made from brass tubing wrapped in nylon. The collection is available exclusively to the trade.

Touch – DinnerTalks

Last night we attended the second DinnerTalk hosted by TOUCH Los Angeles. Twelve guests from the design community are invited to the TOUCH showroom to hear a semi-formal presentation from a featured speaker and then gather around the Skinny Table for conversation and great food. Last night’s featured speaker: Ivy Chuang, Founder and Designer of Knoend – a SF based ideas and product development company. Her topic: design and culture in a post-globalization world.

The participants: Ivy Chuang-Knoend, Christopher Wargin-PRoGRESS bureau of design, Jill Blackford-Writer, Lori Sherwood-Unisource Solutions, Beth Manning-Livenation, Evelyn Lee-Inhabitat, Jennifer Robbins-Jennifer Robbins Textiles, Haily Zaki-Secret Agent PR, Susan Reed-Furnitureseen, Zoe Melo-TOUCH, Peter Scherrer-TOUCH and Anita Engs-Furnitureseen (me!).

The dinner conversation was directed – it wasn’t about networking, it was about Ivy’s presentation as a starting point for the exchange of ideas that came from twelve distinct experiences. In that process we learned something real about each person at the table. What I took away: think about the ripple effect of your actions: What if you buy those $7 shoes at Walmart? What if I choose to go to McDonalds while in Germany? What does it all mean, who do I impact? I also learned that I like the Skinny Table, its nice to be nearer to the people you are interacting with – I think closer proximity encourages connections.

Thanks to Zoe and Peter of TOUCH for coming up with the series and executing it so well.

Capiz Shell Light

Lotus Flower Hanging Lamp is made from individually, hand cut capiz shells that have been edged in silver. The pendant comes in either white or smoke shells and is available in three sizes: 13″, 19″ or 21″ Diameter. The fixture takes a 100 watt bulb. Not only is it simply pretty, it is pretty well priced starting at $680. @ Room, NYC.

Neon Sculpture

One of the best things about blogging is getting tips about things you would never come across on your own. Here is one example: Roger Borg is located in Perth Amboy, New Jersey where he runs a neon sign business. However, Roger is also a fine artist who, after post graduate work in fine art, did a stint at Dale Chihuly’s Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. The neon art most certainly comes from a guy who knows his medium. I found it pretty interesting @ Rogerborg.com.

Moss Floor Mat

Its a little weird, but I like it – must be the Oregonian in me. This moss mat is made of hard-wearing foam with cells that house each piece of ball, island or forest moss. The humidity of the bathroom and water dripping off the body water the mosses and produce a natural carpet that feels great on the feet. Designed by La Chanh Nguyen . via Modern Urban Living.

Great deals on Modern Furniture continued…

The sale continues at Property in Soho until February 28th. All new orders (except Tom Dixon) will be discounted at 20%. The showroom is also offering some fantastic prices on floor models. Check out their website Property, menu item:SALE to see what they are offering.

But Can You Feel The Heat?

Apparently you can with this coffee table – fire element combination from Planika, designed by Christophe Pillet. The fire is fueled by Fanola, a bio-ethanol liquid which is a smoke free, odorless flamable liquid which emits steam and CO2 in proportions similar to the exhalation of a person. A metal cup is placed in the center of the unit. To light the fire, you fill the fuel container with Fanola and light it. Each liter of Fanola burns for 2-5 hours. There are a number of interesting fire elements, both indoor and out from Planika.  Designs are freestanding and wall mounted. All are flue-less, smokeless and odorless. Available @ Magedman Modern.
