Concrete Fire Bowl

This beautiful concrete firebowl is made by Solus in Vancouver BC.

It is 36″ across and 17″ high, so it provides a little more height than the other bowls we’ve look at so far. Made from handcrafted concrete and intended to burn gas or propane. The flame from the earth effect is stunning. The price is in a different league at $4200, but it is really beautiful.

Fire Feature

Ok this firepit is minimal and attractive. A good size at 31″ or 40″ square and 10″high. Made from cold rolled carbon steel with a natural rust finish. The smaller piece is priced at just over $1000, not a bad price. @ Gibraltar.

Skagerak Olympia Firebowl

A more modest proposal, but very appealing just the same. Olympia Firebowl is about 24″ diameter and 8″ high – perfect for roasting marshmallows or just lighting up the night. I can’t find information on the material, but I’m thinking its painted steel. This is a very affordable option at about $300.

Fire Bowl

In case you think I am obsessing over Corten Steel, this Big Bowl O Zen can be ordered with a high temperature grill paint. I like the shape of this firebowl which was designed by John T. Unger somewhere in Northern Michigan, I believe. This piece is available in 30″ or 37″ diameter and can be upgraded to a natural gas or propane firepit for an additional $200. Starting at $749 for the smaller bowl, this is pretty well priced.

Backyard Fires

Nothing inspires the search for the best like self interest. We are in the process of deciding whether to purchase or design and fabricate a firepit for our relatively small backyard. There are a fair number of contemporary fire pits on the market so I’ve decided to share of few that I found interesting. First up is the Qrater by Dirk Wynants.  Extermis is a Belgian company that designs “tools for togetherness” and is definitely worth a look. I like Qrater for its simplicity and materiality. A flat dish of Corten Steel – modern without being slick – Its big at about 57″ diameter and 10″high – not inexpensive, about $2300.

Vintage Murano Chandelier

This vintage Murano glass chandelier is from the 1970’s and consists of a metal frame connecting 28 white hand forged glass discs to form at 4 tiered pendant - I love the hand so evident in the work. Retails for $2500 @ D Scale, Boston.

Krislyn Flowers

Several years ago I received a postcard from a florist who was part of a design collective. She did beautiful, interesting work. I don’t use a florist frequently, but I always went back to this same designer. As those things go, she became very popular and could no longer handle small orders like mine. So I asked her for a referral, she suggested Krislyn. That was several years ago, but the work was just as beautiful. I still only use a florist on occassion, but I had forgotten about Krislyn until recently. I visited ICON Interiors, a modern furniture showroom in LA. There were these beautiful “permanent” floral arrangements – they were from Krislyn. A few nights later, my husband and I went out for dinner. We passed by Krislyn’s shop and the arrangements were creative, innovative and beautiful. I’m not likely to forget about this special place again.
